Q: What skills are learned in a nutritionist program?

A: The basic skills a nutritionist needs to learn are how to evaluate and prescribe diets for patients or clients. Nutritionists also need to know about exercise and other lifestyle habits to improve overall health. Nutritionists learn how to serve people with special dietary needs, like those with diabetes.

Q: What Does a Nutritionist Do?

A: A nutritionist is a person who plans meals that are in compliance with nutritional, medical and other special needs for those who are in nursing homes, hospitals or who are under help from a physician..

Q: Science and Math Courses Are Required ?

A: Because this is a career area that is heavy in the knowledge of science and math, it is important to have a strong background in these areas. In addition, it helps greatly in this filed to have strong communication skills. Such communication skills will help when dealing with other doctors, social workers, nurses and family members of the patient.

Q: License and Certification Are Needed ?

A: Requirements to become a nutritionist vary from state to state but most states require the nutritionist to be licensed and certified. Before signing up for any nutritionist programs be sure to check out certification information, college catalogs and school requirements and application forms. Career counseling can be invaluable when deciding on which school to choose and the requirements needed to enter this career choice.

What Constitutes Practicing as a Nutritionist Without a License ?

Nutritionists are not licensed or regulated. This means that even someone without the proper educational background can call themselves a nutritionist. People using the term nutritionist to describe themselves have often had experience in health and dietary control but no formal nutritional education or certification. Health clubs, weight loss businesses and other non-medical facilities are common places to find nutritionists.

Individuals calling themselves a Registered Dietitian are breaking the law if they do not have the licensing and certification background. To hide their lack of experience and education many nutritionists use terms such as “dietary educator” “diet coach” or “Nutrition Specialist” to describe themselves. Nutritionists lack regulatory licensing so they are not qualified to give dietary medical advice to heart patients, diabetes patients and other medical patients who require dietary consultation.

I am thinking about becoming a RN or a nutritionist. Is it the same path if you’re getting Associates Degree in Nursing? or would it take more years

I want to go back to school and become a nutritionist. I already have my AS degree and have worked as a Registered Dental Assistant for 26 years. I am 50 years old and wondering if it would be difficult to be hired at age 52, wich is when I will probably be finished with school.
